There are three main options. EN 15343 is the European standard covering the traceability of recycled plastic and the conformity assessment of recycled content. GRS includes social, environmental, and chemical requirements in addition to recycled content; RCS, on the other hand, only verifies the presence and percentage of recycled material. Which standard is appropriate depends on your customer’s requirements and your target market.

In countries such as Spain, the plastic packaging tax is calculated based on the amount of non-recycled plastic. Manufacturers who document the recycled content using a standard such as EN 15343 can reduce their tax burden by providing proof of this percentage. Unsubstantiated claims may not be accepted by tax authorities.
