BRCGS Consumer Products Standard

Quality and safety in consumer products stay in the minds of consumers longer than the shelf life of the brand. The BRCGS Consumer Products Standard (BRCGS CP) aims to ensure that non-food product groups circulate safely in the global supply chain and provide a competitive advantage on retail shelves.

What are BRCGS Consumer Products?

BRCGS Consumer Products is an internationally recognized safety and quality standard for non-food products in the categories of personal care, household chemicals, household products, textiles, toys, electronics and much more. The standard has two main categories: BRCGS Consumer Products Standard covers two product groups

Global Standard for Consumer Products – General Merchandise
Global Standard for Consumer Products – Personal Care & Household

Global Standard for Consumer Products – General Merchandise

This covers a wide range of commercial products.

  • Textiles and textile products (clothing, towels, bed linen)
  • Shoes, bags, leather products
  • Furniture, toys, electronics
  • Products made of materials such as wood, glass, plastic, ceramics

Focal point:

  • Product safety and legal compliance
  • Managing risks in the production process
  • Appropriateness of factory design and maintenance
  • Product testing and sampling processes

These products are generally low risk in terms of hygiene, but have high physical safety and quality requirements.

  • General Merchandise (GM): Textiles, toys, stationery, household products, decorative items and electronic appliances, etc.

Global Standard for Consumer Products – Personal Care & Household

This includes formulated products with high hygiene requirements.

  • Cosmetic products (creams, cosmetics)
  • Household cleaning products (detergents, disinfectants)
  • Baby products (diapers, care products)
  • Disposable products in contact with food (kitchen towels, foil, cling film)

Focal point:

  • Higher hygiene and GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) requirements
  • Safety of the product formulation
  • Prevention of contamination risks
  • Hygienic design of the production environment

These products are subject to high hygiene and safety standards as they come into direct contact with skin or food.

  • Personal Care and Household Products (PCH): Covers products such as personal hygiene, cosmetics, detergents and cleaning.

Standard Structure:
Levels and Criteria

Foundation and Higher Level

Foundation Level: Includes legal compliance, product safety and minimum quality controls. It is evaluated with a “pass/fail” system, no grading is done.

Higher Level: Requires more records management, process monitoring and continuous improvement, as well as legal and critical quality controls. Results in a rating score and stands out in terms of prestige.

At both levels, the entire supply chain is under control, from product design, raw material procurement, production, packaging and distribution. Traceability, recall simulation and product label compliance are ensured as critical documentation.

Certification Process

1

Preparation of the necessary documentation and procedures by the company

The company establishes a quality management system in accordance with the requirements of the BRCGS Consumer Products Standard and prepares the necessary policies, procedures, and records. This phase lays the foundation for audit preparation and ensures that all provisions of the standard can be implemented on-site.

2

Receipt of the application and proposal preparation (The audit period varies depending on the company’s size, number of employees, and processes.)

Once the company’s application is received, its scope of operations, product groups, and site information are evaluated, and a proposal tailored to these details is prepared. The duration of the audit is determined based on the company’s size, number of employees, and production processes.

3

Signing of the Contract

Once the proposal is approved by the company, a documentation agreement outlining the scope of the audit and the mutual obligations of the parties is signed. This step marks the official start of the process and clarifies the responsibilities of the parties.

4

Audit Planning

After the contract is signed, the audit date, team, and schedule are planned in collaboration with the company. The scope and agenda of the audit are shared in advance to ensure that the company can fully complete the necessary preparations.

5

Conducting the audit

The appointed auditors assess compliance with the standard’s requirements on-site through field inspections, record reviews, and interviews with staff. Any nonconformities identified are documented and reported to the company, and the company is informed of the necessary corrective actions.

6

Completion of the audit process

The audit process is completed once the company has addressed the nonconformities identified during the audit and the corrective actions have been verified. The closure of all findings fulfills the necessary conditions for the certification decision.

7

Preparation of the audit report and, if the outcome is positive, inclusion in the BRCGS Directory

Based on an evaluation of the audit results, a detailed audit report is prepared and a decision regarding certification is made. If the outcome is positive, the company receives its certificate, and its information is recorded in the international BRCGS Directory, making it accessible on a global scale.
