Climate Report Released Ahead of COP28

Global experts, together with the UNFCCC, have released the report ‘10 New Predictions in Climate Science’. The report summarises the last 18 months of climate research and provides guidance for COP28 and policy-making. The findings show that exceeding the Paris Agreement’s 1,5°C target is almost inevitable and emphasise the need for a rapid phase-out of fossil fuels.

It states that permanent CO₂ removal technologies must be rapidly developed and deployed. Fair and inclusive adaptation strategies to extreme climate events are gaining importance. Food systems play a critical role, as they account for one-third of global emissions. The inclusion of poor communities in policy design is essential for equitable solutions. High-income countries must lead the way in reducing fossil fuels and support low-capacity countries. COP28 presents an opportunity to move away from fossil fuels and integrate nature and climate policies.
