FAO Publishes 2025 Global Fisheries Report

The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) has published its report on the state of global marine fisheries for 2025. Titled ‘Review of the State of World Marine Fisheries Resources,’ the report was prepared with contributions from over 650 experts from 92 countries. Providing the most comprehensive assessment of global marine fisheries to date, the report offers important data based on the analysis of over 2,500 marine fish stocks. With these data, FAO offers an in-depth perspective on the sustainability status and future of marine fisheries. According to FAO’s report, more than 80% of fish stocks in ocean areas worldwide are managed sustainably. This is considered a positive development for the conservation of marine ecosystems.

At the same time, it was noted that 77% of fish landed and available for human consumption were from biologically sustainable stocks. These findings indicate that global marine fisheries have made significant progress in terms of marine biodiversity and sustainability.

However, the report also highlights some challenges for the future of marine fisheries. In particular, overfishing in some ocean areas and threats to local ecosystems pose a serious risk to sustainable fisheries. Therefore, the FAO emphasises that international cooperation and the strengthening of regional management are crucial measures for the future of marine fisheries.
