Global Fiber Production Reaches Record High: “Textile Exchange Materials Market Report 2025” Released

Global Fiber Production Reaches Record High Textile Exchange Materials Market Report 2025 Released

Textile Exchange has published its Materials Market Report 2025, revealing the rise in raw material production and the growing role of certified fibers in the global textile industry. According to the report, global fiber production, which stood at around 125 million tons in 2023, increased to 132 million tons in 2024—more than doubling since the year 2000.

If current trends continue, fiber production could reach 169 million tons by 2030, raising concerns about the sector’s ability to meet climate goals. The industry remains heavily dependent on non-renewable fossil-based synthetics. Polyester continues to dominate, accounting for 59% of global fiber output, of which 88% is fossil-based.

Although recycled polyester production has increased, its market share remains around 12%. Production rose from 8.9 million tons in 2023 to 9.3 million tons in 2024. However, the rapid growth of virgin fossil-based polyester makes it difficult for recycled fibers to gain market share.

Cotton production fell by 1% in 2023/24, down to 24.5 million tons, though it still holds the second-largest share after polyester. Recycled fibers overall accounted for just 7.6% of total production in 2024, most of it from PET bottle recycling. Pre- and post-consumer textile recycling remains below 1% of the global fiber market.

On the positive side, certified fiber production has shown significant growth. Today, 34% of global cotton comes from certified sources. Two-thirds of man-made cellulosic fibers (MMCF) are certified or from controlled sources, and half of all mohair is now produced under the Responsible Mohair Standard.

These figures underline the importance of traceability and certification in the textile sector. Textile Exchange emphasizes that scaling recycling capacity and adopting innovative technologies will be essential.

Ultimately, the Materials Market Report 2025 is not just about numbers; it is a call for the industry to accelerate sustainable and climate-aligned strategies. Traceable supply chains, certified inputs, and advanced recycling methods are positioned as key levers for shaping the sector’s future.
