Historic Support Package for Wine Producers from the European Union

The European Union (EU) has launched a comprehensive support and restructuring package to revive the wine sector, which is going through a difficult period due to the climate crisis and changes in global consumption habits.

A ‘Permanent’ Solution to the Surplus Problem

The package directly targets the sector’s most chronic problem in recent years: surplus and market saturation. To balance production, which has exceeded consumption demand, the EU has introduced a radical compensation system.

Vine Removal Compensation: In regions identified as saturated, producers who decide to permanently remove their vines will receive cash compensation from EU funds.

Market Balance: This measure aims to prevent price instability in the market and protect quality production.

Climate Change and Sustainability

The new package of measures covers not only the economic downturn but also changing climate conditions. The support programme includes incentives to facilitate producers’ transition to environmentally friendly farming techniques.
