Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for Women: Time to Increase Safety and Comfort

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for Women: Time to Increase Safety and Comfort

The increasing presence of women in the workforce necessitates that the design of personal protective equipment (PPE) be tailored to women. PPE traditionally manufactured for men ignores women’s anatomical differences, which can lead to serious safety risks. Especially in sectors such as construction, manufacturing and mining, the lack of right-sized PPE for women negatively affects work efficiency and safety.

Incorrectly sized PPE can invite work accidents; loose clothing can get caught in machinery, gloves can provide an inappropriate grip, which can lead to work accidents. Furthermore, poor fit can reduce performance and cause workers to avoid using the equipment. For example, if a woman’s gloves are too big for her fingers, it is difficult for her to work safely with the equipment. Footwear can cause long-term musculoskeletal problems if it is ill-fitting.

Today, many manufacturers have begun to offer PPE designed specifically for women. Not only do these innovations better address women’s safety needs, but they also improve work comfort. For example, high-visibility garments are designed to fit the female body. Gloves are made for women’s hands to provide a better grip. Eye protectors are offered in shapes suitable for women’s facial structure and shoes are designed according to women’s foot structure.

The steps employers should take in this regard are quite clear. It is critical to conduct regular PPE assessments taking into account the needs of female employees, stock women-specific PPE in various sizes, receive feedback from female employees and co-operate with suppliers. In this way, full compliance with occupational safety standards can be achieved and a safe working environment can be created for all employees.

Women-specific PPE designs are becoming increasingly important and developments in this area are encouraging greater safety and inclusion in the world of work. With this shift, employers and manufacturers should work to maximise the safety and comfort of their female employees.

These steps will ensure that the future workforce is safer, more productive and inclusive.
