BRCGS Consumer Products Certification ensures compliance with the new USA Modernisation of Cosmetics Regulation Act (MoCRA)
The Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act of 2022 (MoCRA) marks a significant milestone as the first substantial overhaul of the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) cosmetics regulations since 1938. Set to take effect this year, this legislation is meticulously crafted to bolster the safety of everyday cosmetic products, aligning U.S. cosmetics regulations more closely with the standards established by the EU cosmetics regulation.
MoCRA ushers in notable adjustments to cosmetics regulations within the United States. These include the introduction of a novel concept known as the “Responsible Person” (RP), updated labeling mandates, obligatory product listing and facility registration, the imperative reporting of serious adverse events, and a comprehensive assessment of finished product safety. Furthermore, the regulation will institute a fresh set of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) benchmarks specifically for cosmetic products manufactured within the U.S.
It’s crucial for businesses impacted by this legislation to proactively prepare their products to meet the newly stipulated requirements, as non-compliant products will face prohibition. Certification to the BRCGS Consumer Products (Personal Care and Household) Global Standard Issue 4 will help to ensure that any site either selling cosmetic products in the USA or exporting to the USA will comply with the act.
