GOTS has announced the transition to new ISO standards for DNA testing in cotton. Visit USB Certification for more information and the latest updates.

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) has announced the release of new standards by the International Standards Organisation (ISO) under the numbers ISO 5354 (parts 1 and 2). These standards are aimed at improving the detection of DNA in cotton used for textile production and will replace the previous IWA 32:2019 standard.

  • ISO/DIS 5354-1.2 : Molecular biomarkers — Detection of DNA in cotton used for textile production — Part 1: Extraction of DNA from cotton seed and raw materials derived therefrom
  • ISO/TS 5354-2 : Molecular biomarkers — Detection of DNA in cotton used for textile production — Part 2: Overview of target sequences for use in polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based detection methods for cotton genetically modified (GM) events

These new standards represent a significant advancement in molecular biomarker detection, ensuring more accurate and reliable testing methods.

GOTS will start transitioning to these new test methods by updating their documentation, including the Standard, website, and Implementation Manual, beginning next year. This revision process will be conducted through the regular revision cycle.

During this implementation period, testing conducted using the previous IWA 32 standard will remain valid and accepted. An official statement regarding the transition deadline will be issued after consulting with experts.
