In February, Textile Exchange published a new guidance document to support companies in the fashion, apparel, and textile industry in setting science-based targets for nature. This initiative encourages brands and retailers to look beyond greenhouse gas emissions and set more holistic impact goals to promote sustainable raw material production.
The textile industry heavily relies on fossil-based and land-based raw materials, which significantly affect natural ecosystems. With fibers like cotton and leather now classified as High-Impact Commodities by the Science Based Targets Network (SBTN), the industry has a unique opportunity to restore nature and biodiversity through regenerative production practices.
The SBTN’s 2024 introduction of science-based targets for nature provides a structured methodology for brands to address critical environmental factors. However, effective implementation requires detailed, location-specific data and greater supply chain transparency.
The Textile Exchange guidance simplifies this process by offering practical steps and considerations to help brands implement Step 3 of the SBTN framework, focusing on freshwater and land in raw material production. By addressing these key areas, the industry can reduce its ecological footprint, support biodiversity conservation, and enhance natural system regeneration.
