2026 Revision of ISO 14001 Environmental Management System Standard Published
The 2026 Revision of the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System Standard by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was published on April 15.
In the 2026 revision, it is seen that climate change issues, which were published as an amendment in 2024 but did not revise the standard, were added, and some differences were included along with wording changes.
We can examine the prominent issues in the ISO 14001:2026 revision under 2 main headings.
- General Changes:
- In the 2015 revision and previous revisions of the ISO 14001 Standard, we see that the wording of “this international standard/this standard” has been changed to “this document”. Although this seems to be just a change of expression, we see that ISO now wants this standard to be more internalized and aims to prevent organizations from seeing this standard as just an outsourced document.
- Again, what appears to be a change in wording, the phrase “must maintain / store” in the 2015 revision and previous revisions of the ISO 14001 Standard has been replaced with the phrase “must be readily available / must be provided / must be kept available / must be maintained / must be provided / must be provided / must be presented as evidence”. This change in wording explains to us that in today’s world where everything is digitalized, it is aimed to prevent wastes such as printouts, signatures, etc. and to ensure more efficient use of resources in a changing world.
- Another wording change is the replacement of the expression “defined” in the previous revisions with the expression “determined” in the ISO 14001:2026 revision. It is seen that this wording change is aimed to increase awareness.
- Material Changes:
- In 2024, we see that “Climate Change” issues were added to the standard as an amendment to the ISO 14001:2015 revision. But these additions are still the main clauses;
4.1 Understanding the Foundation and its Context
4.2 Understanding the Needs and Expectations of Interested Parties
articles, and with these additions, it has been ensured that the standard is taken into consideration throughout.
- In Article 6, the risks and opportunities section of the 2015 revision, we see that some important changes have been made in addition to the wording changes we have explained above. When we examine these important changes, we see that the “Planning” item in Article 6.1.4 in the ISO 14001:2015 revision was handled as Article 6.1.5 in the ISO 14001:2026 revision and the “6.1.4 Risks and Opportunities” item was added to Article 6.1.4. With this change, we see that Environmental Risks and Opportunities are further clarified and new additions related to these risks have been added to the standard.
- 6. Another important addition to Article 6 is that the issues related to the management of changes, which were not included in the 2015 revision but appeared in the ISO 9001:2015 standard as “6.3 Planning of Changes” and in the ISO 45001:2018 standard as “8.1.3 Change Management”, are included in the ISO 14001:2026 revision as “6.3 Planning of Changes”. This addition means that organizations applying the standard should also evaluate internal or external changes affecting the organization in terms of environmental conditions.
- One of the last most important changes is that Article 10 “10.1 General – 10.2 Nonconformity and Corrective Action – 10.3 Continuous Improvement” in ISO 14001:2025 revision has been changed to “10.1 Continuous Improvement – 10.2 Nonconformity and Corrective Action” in ISO 14001:2026 revision. While this may seem like a big change, it is actually a merging of the “10.1 General – 10.3 Continuous Improvement” clauses in the ISO 14001:2015 revision under “10.1 Continuous Improvement” and making the standard clearer.
We see that the ISO 14001:2026 revision is an attempt to make the standard more internalized by organizations, to clarify integration, to take another step in the use of a common language and to make clearer the steps to be taken for resource management and a sustainable world in today’s world.
