Updates on publication of Packaging Materials Issue 7

In December 2023, BRCGS announced the revision of its Global Standard for Packaging Materials. This update was conducted to align with the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) benchmark requirements, involving key players from across the packaging supply chain. This included Certification Bodies, Accreditation Bodies, retailers, and industry trade groups. The goal was to ensure that the revised standard integrates the latest industry developments, practical experiences, best practices, and evolving customer and regulatory demands.

In May and June, Issue 7 of the Standard was released for global public consultation. This phase allowed the public to provide feedback on the draft requirements and audit protocols, resulting in over 400 comments. BRCGS, alongside the Technical Working Group, reviewed all feedback, making necessary revisions to align the standard with both current and anticipated industry needs.

The revision process for Issue 7 is now complete, and the Standard is in the publication stage, with a launch date set for October 28, 2024.

There will be a six-month transition period for sites and auditors to study the new standard, undergo training, and prepare for the audits, which will begin on April 28, 2025. BRCGS has announced that they are currently preparing training materials, guidance, and support documents and further details regarding these resources will be provided closer to the launch date.
