The International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) has officially adopted the ‘Paris Statement’, which aims to enhance global resilience, accelerate adaptation to climate change and protect nature, as part of its 2026 Annual Meeting held in Paris.
The statement, which was brought to the General Assembly’s agenda at the invitation of AFNOR, France’s national standardisation body, was approved with the full support of ISO member countries.
Beyond Mitigation: An Approach Focused on Adaptation and Nature
This new step, which builds on the climate commitments initiated by the London Declaration announced in 2021, expands the transformative power of standards in the field.
The declaration goes beyond mere carbon emission reduction (mitigation); it places ecosystem resilience, the conservation of biodiversity, water and resource management, and adaptation to climate change at the heart of standards.
Aimed at translating global commitments into concrete business processes, the text positions international standards as a reliable tool for implementation in line with the Paris Agreement and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The Paris Declaration will continue to strengthen the guiding role of science-based standards in international trade, with a view to reducing vulnerabilities in supply chains, ensuring food security and accelerating the sustainable transformation of industry.
