Non-registered PPE providers failing BSIF tests

Non-registered PPE providers failing BSIF tests

BRITISH Safety Industry Federation (BSIF), non-member products alarming in quality checks

The BSIF has alerted those responsible for procuring personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety products after recent tests on non-member products revealed the prevalence of substandard and hazardous items.

Results of BSIF Tests

Between December 2022 and December 2023, BSIF tested 123 non-member products to evaluate their advertised performance, appropriate markings, and compliance with relevant standards. Alarmingly, only 21% (26 products) passed all tests, while 79% (97 products) failed to meet the criteria. Unfortunately, many of these inadequate products remain available and pose significant risks to users.

Examples of Non-member Product Failures

A Flame Retardant Parka purchased online burned completely during flame spread tests, revealing its inner layer that also ignited. The garment lacked appropriate documentation and markings.

A pair of safety boots from the same retailer failed toe cap compression tests. They were over ten years old, had outdated certifications, lacked proper documentation, and were incorrectly marked.

Safety spectacles from a high street retailer shattered during impact resistance tests, and were also missing markings and documentation.

Three pairs of protective gloves bought at a high street retailer delivered only half of their claimed abrasion resistance performance and lacked proper documentation.

An FFP3 Respiratory Protective Mask obtained from a PPE distributor only performed at half the required standard during filter penetration tests and lacked essential documentation.

BSIF Member Test Results

In stark contrast, tests on products from BSIF Registered Safety Suppliers revealed that 91% of the 348 products passed immediately, and issues in the remaining 9% were promptly rectified.

Check for the BSIF Shield

To ensure quality and compliance, buyers should seek the BSIF Shield, a mark signifying that the company provides PPE meeting standards and regulatory requirements, including UKCA and/or CE markings. Registered Safety Suppliers not only provide reliable products but also accurate guidance.

BSIF CEO Alan Murray highlighted that inadequate and substandard PPE and safety equipment are still sold in the UK, putting users at risk. He emphasized the importance of reviewing procurement processes to ensure that only compliant and reliable products are sourced. Checking for the BSIF Shield ensures dealing with trustworthy suppliers.
