The European Commission has announced a new Implementing Regulation designed to maximize transparency, traceability, and data integrity in the fisheries and aquaculture sector. The new regulation, (EU) 2026/1932, will directly affect not only businesses within the European Union but also all third-country suppliers exporting to the EU market.

A new era is beginning for businesses supplying seafood to the European market. Implementing Regulation (EU) No. 2026/1932, published by the European Commission, is reshaping data management and traceability standards in the sector to meet the requirements of the digital age. The regulation aims to ensure product reliability at every stage of the supply chain.

At the heart of the new initiative is the transparent recording and digitization of the entire “from sea to table” process. The key changes and objectives outlined in the regulations are as follows:

  • Seamless Traceability of Product and Batch Information: It is now mandatory to link product identification and batch information accurately and consistently, without any gaps at any stage of the supply chain.
  • Record Retention and Ease of Auditing: This ensures that businesses can securely maintain their traceability records and that authorized authorities have fast and uninterrupted access to all necessary data.
  • The Shift to Digital Data Management: Innovative digital data management practices are replacing traditional record-keeping methods to enhance supply chain transparency.

Producers and suppliers in third countries that export fish and seafood to the European Union, in particular, need to quickly comply with this new regulation to avoid encountering any legal or commercial barriers to market access. It is of great importance for industry representatives to review their existing supply chain infrastructure and integrate digital traceability requirements into their operations.
