OSHA Revamps Chemical Safety Standards: New Regulations Take Effect July 19!

Sustainable Products in Europe Rise with New Standards

OSHA has updated its Hazard Communication Standard to improve chemical safety in the workplace. The regulations make significant changes to chemical labeling and safety data sheets to ensure that employers and workers are better informed about chemical hazards. The new rules came into force on July 19, 2024 and are aligned with the United Nations’ Globally Harmonized System (GHS).

Labels are now organized to include hazard class, category, harmonized signal word, pictogram and hazard statements. This will help manage chemical safety in workplaces more effectively. Safety data sheets will have 16 sections, providing more detailed and accessible information for the safe use of chemicals. OSHA says these regulations will reduce chemical accidents and illnesses and improve workplace safety.

Employers will be required to train their employees on these new standards. OSHA will provide training materials and guidance to help employers and employees comply. The changes aim to raise standards in the management of chemical safety in the workplace.

For more information and training resources on these new regulations, please visit OSHA’s website. The site provides guidance on how employers and workers can comply with the new regulations and facilitates access to the necessary information. These steps are aimed at creating a safer workplace and minimizing chemical risks.
